Raw and Marketable
July 30th, 2009The Jewelers of America show at the Jacob Javits Center in Manhattan is always a collage of influences and a patchwork of purposes. It is in equal measure bazaar, trade show, and parade of designer goods waiting for orders or editorial — whichever comes first. But sometimes you discover a diamond in the rough too.

Ring by Jessic Ricci of www.raw-Jewelry.com
There was there was one lovely and alone young woman standing behind what looked like a treasure box filled to the brim with black river rocks and bold jewels in a rainbow of natural hues. Her name was Jessica Ricci and she is the creator of Raw-Jewelry and Market2Market.
Her pieces have a roughly-hewn feel and a warm vibrancy that reflects the designer’s enthusiasm for her work. Ricci’s cocktail rings, presented in finger-flattering octagon-, round– and oval-cuts, are made from gemstones that are not traditionally faceted — a technique that makes obvious their natural inclusions (imperfections) and their wild charm. Mounted in sterling silver or fourteen-carat gold, the claw settings and broad shanks make for easy work-wear and transition effortlessly for dinner out.

14-karat gold pendant by Jessica Ricci for www.market2market.com
Ricci’s pendants are remnants cast from objects discovered in her travels to outdoor markets around the world. The necklace above was inspired by a fragment of antique lace. The designer is a treasure seeker — not unlike this writer — and she expresses her love of the hunt through jewelry; hers is a lyrical view of objects transformed by the tattering nature of time.
I discovered new designers at this year’s show, so there will be more to come. Please return on Monday when I will present an in-depth look at the baubles section on 1stdibs.com — it is a revealing story with some heavy hitters in the industry offering up rare insight into the world of estate and antique jewelry online. Find out who’s selling what, how they do it, and where you can find it…
Until then, have a fantastic weekend.
