And now for something completely different…London Fashion Week. With all the incredible studio jewelers in London, it would seem to be a natural fit for British designers to really personalize their looks with a few well chosen, or even custom-made, items. Not sure why more of them don’t — there was very little by way […]

Whew! Thank goodness. Between the recession and the Golden Globes hide-and-seek chic, I wasn’t sure what to expect at this year’s Oscars. Last night’s Academy Awards shone brightly on the red carpet and in the Kodak Theater. The procession, as well as the show itself, was more luminous (and blissfully less boring) than in years […]

This Sunday night, February 22nd, the annual parade of couture frocks and fabulous rocks will take place at the Academy Awards. My jeweler friends are waiting with baited breath to send me all the news once the red carpet gets rolling. Watch carefully this year and note all the great pieces that you love, I’ll […]

There will be no mistaking this jewelry for fine, or even good costume. This collection for big box retailer, Target, is created by the fashion favored design team of Karen Erickson and Vicki Beamon, is, well, very, very…faux. Not that I was expecting anything less, however I was hoping to see better craftsmanship (this stuff […]

No one rocks the runway like Mother Nature. These colors are straight out of Fashion Week: Aegean blues, iridescent pinks, clear oranges, and rainbow-flecked whites. And it’s all there in a single, scrumptious specimen of stone (say that three times fast). What causes that chimeric appearance is their unique ability to scatter light within the […]

Elise Øverland’s runway yesterday featured jewelry created by artist Alexander Calder, graciously loaned by his grandson, Alexander Rower. Style.com editor, Nicole Phelps, reviewed the show and identified the pieces as, “…Calder’s gold jewelry.” Calder worked predominantly in brass, and sometimes in silver, and infrequently in gold. Not sure what what metal was used to produce […]

More collaborations to report, well, sort of, if you call uniting your frocks with a few precious things from one of the most famous, albeit deceased, sculptors in the world. Rachel Roy’s runway held a mirror up to fashion, literally, with a necklace by Subversive’s Justin Giunta. The concept is commendable. The execution is not. Awkward […]

I’ve called a personal ban on heart jewelry, heart-shaped boxes of candy, or red and pink balloons this year. Larry, my wonderful husband of twenty-three years, knows better than to rely on those old saws to woo me. Because they won’t. What I want is something that will inspire me to write, to read, to […]

Even before the runways are stomped by long-legged, tiny torso’d beauties, Style.com is heralding the jewelry trend that begun last fall. Collaboration is the word of the moment. The website bellowed this pronouncement like the ringleader of the Big Apple Circus: Style Notes: Fall Preview It Bauble to Replace Aching Void Left by Demise of […]

The ongoing expansion of Jewelhistory.com is marching along. Well…not exactly marching, more like strolling. I’m deliberately taking time to think through each and every shift of purpose and subsequent consequence. Measure twice, and cut once…right? Today is the beginning of a new category of posts that will feature the voices of colleagues who I have […]
