2009: Fade To Black…And Bring In The Bright

December 22nd, 2008

What do we do with black? The myriad of choices makes it seem so easy to accessorize, but somehow when you are standing in front of that mirror.…..well, I think we’ve all fought the good fight in the battle of doubt, haven’t we?
There are several ways to handle that dark canvas — and you need […]

TED MUEHLING: A Portrait by Don Freeman illustrates one reason for wearing this much admired craftsman’s aesthetic — it is, from the standpoint of wearability, among the most sensuous of ornamentation on the market today. Muehling’s pieces […]

Innovative Jewelry Insiders Launch A New Business Model

December 16th, 2008

If the recession has done one thing, it has piled enough “manure” on the old “it’s-about-me” business model to bury it. In its place, though, is now fertile soil for a new paradigm to grow and get a healthy start. Cooperation across and between related industries simply makes entrepreneurial sense; there is power in numbers […]

Pre-Fall Collections: Breaking Up Isn’t Hard To Do

December 12th, 2008

What would you wear to break up that blank—oops, sorry— black canvas above? Given that this is a jewelry blog, the answer is pretty obvious. Still, what would you choose? Long gold chains? A layering of pendants? A brooch? A great big pair of earrings? Fab, bold bracelets? Pearls? If vintage is your bent, what […]

Bad News: Economic Shambles, Good News: Color

December 10th, 2008

The fashion folk are flummoxed. In these beyond-your-wildest-dreams-bad economy, they are scratching their Sally Hershberger-coiffed heads and are staring at their story boards with profound consternation. This is a Walt Whitman/transcendental moment.
“What do they want?” They, meaning us, the consumers.
The problem is we are not consuming. We are hunting (for the best price, most […]

Debunking Style.com’s “The Stylist” Jewelry Infomericials

December 7th, 2008

After working out this slightly snow-dusted Sunday morning, I was cruising Style.com in a lazy way, kind of floating around a bit to find some unplanned afflatus (if they use something like VisTrac to monitor the site, sorry…I was not your typical surfer), and stumbled upon the infomercial-like advertising Conde Nast proffers as style advice […]

Yesterday I attended the preview of Van Cleef & Arpels’ newest collection, Les Jardins (The Gardens) at The Plaza in New York. The designs are inspired by our response to nature, and are divided into four separate landscape genres. The collection is a panorama of skill and ingenuity, and showcases what VCA does best.
