Gucci designer Frida Gianni took the look back to the 1970s for the Resort ’09 collection. All the silhouettes were inspired by fashion icons of the time: Talitha Getty, Lee Radziwill and Jane Birkin. Minimalistic long chains were shown on the runway. Still, I couldn’t help but think that vintage Bulgari would really underscore the costly-and-carefree attitude of those clothes. During the 1970s, Bulgari’s necklaces were something quite different from the styles of jewelry that had come before; their generous display of cabochon gems and enamel accented by pavé diamonds were a study in multicolored decadence. The jewelry was built on a grand scale with large curvilinear elements stacked in tiered, bib-style, or collar-shaped outlines. Mounted in yellow gold –white metal was declared dated and conventional –these pieces possessed a casual yet cultured swagger that commingled readily with jet-set life.
