Sarah Jessica Parkers’ Varies Her Vintages On The Sex And The City Red Carpet
May 12th, 2008It’s the London premier of Sex And The City, the long-awaited film that follows up where the heart-fluttering HBO show left off. Sarah Jessica Parker was done up in a gorgeous green frock by Alexander McQueen and a Philip Treacy peacock feather hat that was a whirligig of whimsy.
The show-stopping gems Parker wore were from Fred Leighton. On her wrist, she sported a 1930’s diamond corsage bracelet with over seventy-five carats of diamonds, seven-and-a-half carats (each) of old European-cut diamond earring drops hung from each ear, and her hand glistened with a delicate nineteenth-century diamond cluster ring. I’ve always believed that mixing it up with period jewelry is more creative and certainly more useful. Who has drawers well stocked with jewelry of the same era? Yes, I’ve seen private collections like this, however most people simply do not have the fiscal power or knowledge to do this. Which leaves things open for a melodic melange of ornamentation that simply rocks. Moreover, this newer trend is here to stay because the “suite of jewels” look is too static to work with today’s complex and evolving urban/ethnic/retro designs. And if anyone would like a few new suggestions as what what works well together, I’ve got a head brimming with ideas. Just ask.
Varying vintages is done well when there is a common thread running that runs through the look –something that ties it all together –then having a bit of fun is what’s its about. A bouquet of diamonds, framed in profuse clusters or generous-sized gems, was what Parker went for here. Very glam…and thanks to brilliant Costume Designer/stylist Patricia Field… very, very Sex And The City.
